About
MAINE COON's
Maine Coons are semi-long-haired cats.
What we mean here by semi-long-haired is that the fur is longer than that of a
normal "house" cat, but not as long or voluminous as the fur on a Persian.
It is also much easier to take care of.
Maine Coons are American.
This is true. Maine
Coons are the original large American cat. And the "national Cat" of
the State of Maine. Other "American" breeds have made their way into
the cat scene in the meantime (American Curl, American Wirehair) or have been
invented in "America", but the Maine Coon is and will remain THE American
cat. It is one of the so called Nordic or Wildcat races, together with Siberian
and Norwegian cats. They all have medium-length fur and are quite similar in appearance.
The exact differences between these breeds are slightly blurred at the edges....
It is not known how Maine Coons developed into the large furry animals we know
them to be today. There are several theories to explain this. The least plausible
is that a cat from Maine paired up with a raccoon (coon) to create a Maine Coon
..
Another favourite is that the angora cat from Queen Marie Antoinette (yes - her
from the French Revolution...) that was brought to America was "united"
with the local cats and created large and medium-length-haired offspring.
Maine Coons are large.
Yes they are. But smaller
Maine Coons are also the real thing. And they are still bigger than most other
cat breeds. But the cats you hear about weighing in at 25 pounds are extremely
rare. There are however the most beautiful cats whose backs actually touch the
seat of a chair when they walk along. The girls are of course smaller.
Maine Coons are cute.
And cuddly - and they speak "coonish". They coo, so to speak. Very large
cats with very small voices... They get on well with other cats, dogs and even
children. They are nice to their owner and mostly nice to his friends.
There are at least three sorts of Coonies: oldstyle (with a short nose and lots
of fur, inherited from the Persians that were inbred), long-nosed (Somalis + Siamese
might have been involved here somehow -- the cats with this ancestry can't really
speak proper coonish, they speak some sort of foreign tongue.....) and moderate,
with angular noses and a "lynx" look. High in the leg, with a lengthy
stride, a long, sweeping tail and a bulky appearance. The standards of the various
breeding clubs are similar, but not identical. Therefore it is possible that real
Maine Coons vary in appearance quite considerably and are not all look-alikes
like Siamese cats. But all of them are "the real thing".
Maine Coons are just fantastic.
